Missoni-esque zigzag top

Sunday morning began with me balancing on two narrow beams in a four foot tall crawl space, crowbarring up a huge portion of floor in order to get at the water tanks underneath. Sunday evening ended with me sewing up this blouse. I’d say I had a pretty full and varied day!

I absolutely love the Feb 2008 issue of Burda World of Fashion magazine, and #123A is one of the three from that issue I’m determined to have! I used the remains of some fabulous jersey from Gorgeous Fabrics that reminded me so much of Missoni zigzags that I couldn’t say no (you might also remember this fabric from the top I made my mom for Christmas!).

From start to finish, this took me about two hours, so it was definitely a quick, fun top! I changed the sleeves from the cute, banded ones in the pattern – not because I didn’t like them, but because we’re still very much in long sleeve weather here in London and I need long sleeved tops much more than short sleeves! I really like the styling of the neck and the shape of this, though, so I definitely want to make this again using the short sleeves.

The only thing I’d change next time is to make the front and back pieces an inch or two longer (and I’ve already marked my pattern pieces to reflect this!). The shirt fits great with my arms at my side, but really rises up when I lift my arms, and I think an extra bit of length will help keep the band from pulling up out of place (and Christina noticed the same issue when she made this top).

Next up: #119 from the same issue of BWOF, using that gorgeous printed silk charmeuse I bought in Dublin. The muslin fits fine and I’m all ready to break out the French seams this time!
