A few months ago I visited a good friend who used to work in the fashion industry. Since she doesn’t sew anymore, she ends up gifting me with random jewlels from her stash that I graciously accept. This time around there were some small offcuts of an Alexander McQueen leather! It’s a pale peach-pink with a white crackle top, and the pieces were all fairly small.
Yup, that’s it. But it still seemed like enough to make another Jalie Linus waistpack (included in their Galaxie 4 pattern bundle). If you recall, I made one in grey wool a few summers ago and I generally use it as my handbag whenever I go out, so I thought it’d be nice to have a luxe leather one, too.
I did all the same minor changes as with the previous waistpack, the only difference being that I only sewed one central dividing line of stitching on the inner pocket instead of three. I found on the wool one that splitting it into three made the side triangular pieces too small to actually use. I even added a key leash like before, since it means my keys will never fall out when I pull other items out of the bag.
For the lining fabric I used the cat viscose leftover from my birthday shirt, which just makes me smile.
As before, the instructions mean there’s a big ring seam inside with raw edges that will inevitably catch crumbs, so binding that ends up being the best option. This time I bound it with some leftover bias binding from the recycled coffee sack jacket, frankly because it was just sitting there in my stash, and I was too lazy to cut out binding from the cat fabric! It’s only ever inside anyway…
I actually planned making this bag so long ago that all the hardware and matching(!) webbing was bought when we were in Berlin last September.
I even got to try it out on a rare outing from home to test out some electric cargo bikes.
Even better – my friend found more offcuts of this leather, so I can make something else to match in future!
